Care & Cleaning of your Jewelry

Here are some basics for taking care of jewelry. Basics will help keep your jewelry looking fresh and wearing well.

  • On a regular basis, we recommend once annually, you should bring in your jewelry to us and have us inspect and clean it for you. This is especially true for your diamond jewelry. During this inspection, we will inspect and look for any signs of a faulty setting that can lead to losing a stone. We will also ensure that the prongs are properly securing the stone and will remove any dirt from the cavities of your channel settings. While you’re here, it’s especially wise to question about what cleaners to use and the appropriate procedures to follow, in order to keep your jewelry in first-class condition.
  • We do advise you to clean all your jewelry regularly, because aside from just improving the appearance of your fashion accessory, cleaning will remove any dirt, grit, or sand particles. This is especially true for diamond jewelry created with settings of gold, platinum, and palladium.
  • It is important to note if you start to see that your setting is becoming worn out or failing; for example, you notice that a prong has been damaged and the diamond is becoming loose in the setting, then immediately bring that item in for us to check. Failure to do so can result in the stone completely dislodging from the setting, which can result in the loss of the stones. Do not hesitate to bring in your items, even if you just suspect a problem.
  • Even though diamonds are extremely hard, because of the way they are cut, diamonds can chip if struck at the right angle. You can avoid harm to your diamond by removing your jewelry when working in any situation that might result in damage.
  • Because diamonds are one of the hardest materials, you should store your jewelry in separate compartments of softer material.

Here are some tips if you can’t get to our store or if you prefer to clean your jewelry yourself. Get an old toothbrush and a bowl of mild liquid detergent. Gently brush your jewelry in this mixture, then rinse each piece under warm water. Another cleaning tool is household ammonia. Use a 50-50 solution of ammonia and cold water and soak your jewelry for 30 minutes before brushing with a soft-bristle toothbrush. Rinse in the ammonia solution again after brushing, then leave on a paper towel to dry.
